On-Road vs. Off-Road Diesel
On-road diesel is used to power vehicles that operate on public roads, such as commercial trucks, public buses, school buses, and cars. This fuel is specifically designed for highway use, meeting emissions standards, and is the type of diesel available at gas stations for everyday drivers.
Off-road diesel is used to power
generators and
off-road construction vehicles,
such as bulldozers and excavators, and
farm machinery such as tractors and combines. A red dye is added to off-road diesel to easily identify it as a different fuel type from on-road diesel. You cannot legally use off-road diesel on public roads. The red dye is detectable, and penalties for misuse can be significant. Because it is not used on public roads, it is not subject to federal and state excise taxes, making it a cheaper option for qualifying businesses.
